Panic disorder
A sudden rush of fear can feel overwhelming, especially when you do not know why it is happening. Understanding the pattern is a place to start.
New educational draft · Clinician and editorial review pending.
A panic attack is not the same as panic disorder
A panic attack is a sudden surge of fear or discomfort. It may involve a racing heart, shaking, dizziness, breathlessness, or nausea. One attack does not establish panic disorder.
Panic disorder involves recurring, unexpected attacks, and persistent worry or changes in behavior because of them. Avoiding situations can begin to restrict everyday life.
What an assessment looks at
A clinician considers the timing, frequency, and impact of episodes, along with your physical health, medicines, and substance use. Other conditions can cause similar symptoms; an assessment helps clarify what needs attention.
New or severe chest pain, fainting, or significant breathing difficulty needs urgent medical assessment rather than an assumption that it is anxiety.

Treatment is a conversation
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), including carefully planned exposure work, is an established approach. Medication may also help. Options depend on your history, preferences, and health. Progress often takes time, and the plan may need adjustment.
Questions worth bringing
What happens just before an episode, and what do I notice in my body? Have I started avoiding anything? What have I already tried? What would I like to be able to do more comfortably?
Ask which therapy approach is recommended, what medication might add, what side effects to discuss, and how you will track whether treatment is helping. You can write your questions down rather than trying to remember everything during a visit.
